A memento to be presented to HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry on the 10th Award ceremony of the prestigious 'Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences' has entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

Minister of Health and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Award HE Humaid Al Qattami disclosed that the memento is prepared in appreciation of the patronage of the Award by Sheikh Hamdan.

Dubai is fast becoming a hub for cruise tourism as cruise tourist arrivals in the Emirate is expected to grow over 75 per cent to 200,000 this year. Dubai received just 2,700 cruise passengers from five ship calls in 2003, but last year 113,000 cruise passengers visited the city. Cruise tourists have grown dramatically since European operator Costa Crociere began using Dubai as hub for cruises, also covering Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Bahrain.

 "We expect the number of cruise tourists to exceed 200,000 in 2008," said Hamad Mohammad Bin Majren, Executive Director of business development at Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), aboard the AIDAdiva cruise ship.

The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) unveiled the unique luxury items to be auctioned at Cinema Against AIDS Dubai 2008, under the patronage of Princess Haya bint al Hussein, wife of the UAE Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The second annual event will raise funds for amfAR, the world's leading organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS research, education, and public policy advocacy. Cinema Against AIDS is its flagship event, held at film festivals around the world in the company of the world's most famous people.

 The spotlight was on Dubai as the opening night of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) saw celebrities walked the red carpet at Madinat Jumeirah. It is the fifth edition of DIFF.

Oliver Stone’s film, ‘W’ was premiered at the exclusive opening night, bringing some of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices. The film - a biopic of President George W. Bush - has drawn both criticism and applause for its depiction of the American president.

Emirates, which has one of the world's youngest fleets, will try a new fuel-saving programme as it conducts the longest green journey on December 15 with its Dubai-San Francisco flight. Emirates said it worked closely with government agencies in Dubai, Russia, Iceland, Canada, the United States and other countries to plot what it called the 'Environment Flight'.

The flight has been described as "the most environmentally-sophisticated route and trip possible to help save an estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel and 30,000 pounds of carbon emissions on the 16-hour non-stop service." The airline will use the new Boeing 777-200LR to service the San Francisco-Dubai route as part of the airline's multi-billion dollar investment in economic and environmental efficiencies.

The school now has almost 1,000 students of 30 nationalities. It also makes sure to serve its growing American community, which is estimated to be around 30,000 in the UAE, including around 15,000-16,000 in Dubai, said Paul Sutphin, US Consul General in Dubai and a member in the school board.

According to its website, the school is owned by the Cultural Foundation, which was established by Decree of the Ruler of Dubai. The board is self-appointed and perpetual under the rules of the Cultural Foundation.

The Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has said that the UAE was keen on reaching its goal of ensuring that the nation prospered and ranked high among the advanced countries.

 H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, has launched a new initiative to help embed the spirit of national identity among government employees as part of the 37th UAE National Day celebrations.

The programme that will be implemented with immediate effect by all Dubai Government departments concurs with the guidelines set by the UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan while naming 2008 as the Year of National Identity.

Emirates Airline has launched A380 - EK001, which departs Dubai daily at 0745hrs and arrives in London Heathrow at 1135hrs. The A380 deployed on the Dubai -Heathrow route is the third of 58 that Emirates ordered, making it by far the largest customer for the super-efficient superjumbo.


Tim Clark, President, Emirates Airline, said: "We are delighted to bring our customers state-of-the-art comforts ich are unmatched anywhere else in the world. Despite today's challenging economic environment, they have responded by booking every seat on our inbound and outbound flights."

Dubai has been named the world's leading destination and cruise port at this year's World Travel Awards.  The event, dubbed "the Oscars of the travel industry”, was held recently on the Caribbean island of Turks and Caicos.

Dubai also snatched a slew of other awards in the night which featured a performance from 1970s disco queens Sister Sledge. The Palm Jumeirah was named the world's leading tourism development project, the Burj Al Arab the world's leading hotel and Le Royal Meridien the world's leading spa resort.
 
Other Dubai-based hotels picking up gongs for their superior service were Grosvenor House and The Monarch.
